Born and raised on one of the agriformed ‘microfarms’ in the formerly desert Australian outback, John had a largely uneventful childhood. In fact, one of the few escapes that he had was through the tales of danger and wonder that his grandfather told him, a retired Asteroid Miner that came home to Earth to ”..die with dirt in his toes, wind in his hair, and a place he can always call Up.” His head filled with the grimy, dangerous romance of prospecting, John knew what he wanted to become.
His grandfather, ever careful for his grandson to lead a normal, safe life, also tried to instil in him fear. He taught him tales of men cooked alive in their suits by radiation, of men exploding into cancerous masses, of pirates and devils, aliens that drove a man mad at the very sight of him. And while this did teach the young John to fear the Great Black, all it ended up doing is add another level of excitement and romance to the mix.
He poured constantly over every book remotely related to asteroid mining, trained for 0g in the local pools, and plied his Grandfather for every little scrap of information that he could, often exchanging stories for work in the kitchen his Grandfather ran. Despite everyone’s insistence that he was a better cook than potential miner, when he came of age, he had saved enough money to purchase a Free Miner’s Charter and enough equipment to start his own claim.
Now all he needed was a way off-planet. Knowing that few of the established mining crews would take on such an inexperienced worker, he attempted to ‘sweeten the deal’ by promoting his services as a cook. The thought of a warm, well-cooked meal is a tempting offer to many spacers, and soon he found himself passage to worlds and wonders that he had only dreamed about…
John is young, enthusiastic, and perhaps a little too naive for his own good. He believes in the innate romance and beauty of a hard day’s work in the black of space, and his can-do attitude endears him to many people. He is inexperienced, however, and often this catches himself short when placed in situations that up until then, he had only read and dreamt about.
